Seeing Double?
Have you ever been grocery shopping and thought you were seeing double? For example, you just finished your walk down the peanut butter and jelly aisle and now suddenly, next to the refrigerated sticks of butter and cream cheese, you are confronted with yet another variety of peanut butter. You think to yourself, how can this be? Immediately the words "all natural" pop out to you and you are baffled. This refrigerated peanut butter claims "all natural, no preservatives" just like the brand already in your cart, which you studied thoroughly before placing it in there. What gives? Well, I too recently had this experience and simply had to compare the two varieties. The peanut butter brands under review are: Old Home Crunchy Peanut Butter (refrigerated) and Smucker's Natural Chunky Peanut Butter (peanut butter and jelly aisle). Both varieties have the same serving size of 2 tbsp (32 grams). Per serving, Old Home Crunchy Peanut Butter has less calories, less sodium, more fiber and more protein. Most importantly, it contains zero grams of sugar versus Smucker's which contains 1 gram of sugar per serving. With an ingredient list of only peanuts and salt, the sugar in Smucker's is nothing to worry about right? If the sugar was added it would have to be listed in the ingredient list, right? So, where is the sugar coming from? Discovering the Old Home refrigerated brand with no sugar makes me think twice now. I have reached out to Smucker's through email via their "Contact Us" section on their website. I will keep you updated with regard to their response.
