The Subway Challenge

Dear Subway,

I recently purchased a turkey salad and paid $6.16 (tax included). It got me to thinking, here I am trying to eat healthier by purchasing a salad instead of a sandwich and paying more for it? Regular Subway sandwiches are currently only $5 for an entire footlong yet my salad, consisting of chopped up lettuce, cost $6.16 ($5.75 without tax).

Your "JanuANY" special of any regular footlong Subway sandwich for only $5 is great! Your
sandwiches are delicious and the price is unbeatable! However, I have a challenge for you. Your challenge is to include within your "JanuANY" special all your fabulous chopped salads for those of us watching our carbohydrate intake and our wallet.

The cost of the bread for the $5 footlong is speculated to be $3.92 with overhead. The lettuce for the salad can't come close to costing this much. If it is the plastic containers which the salads are being put in, why not switch to a more economical, earth-friendly recyclable paper bowl like Chipotle uses for their "burrito bowls"? There is one website I found (www.branchhome.com) that offers these biodegradable bowls for $0.11 per bowl and discount the price even further with the purchase of greater quantities. Sounds like a win-win to me!

So, what do you say Subway? Will you, a company that purports health with your "Fresh Fit Choices" and "Heart-Healthy Meals" stand behind your promises and include us salad lovers in the footlong savings? I tend to think that this is a deal even Jared could get behind.

Peanut Butter - The Follow Up

Exhibit A - Response from Smucker's Natural Peanut Butter:

In response to your inquiry, the sugar listed in our nutrition facts is not added, it is naturally occurring in the peanuts.

Exhibit B - Response from Old Home Peanut Butter:

To answer your question about the sugar content of peanuts, you are correct - there are natural sugars present in peanuts. The sugar content varies depending on where the peanuts are grown and the specific variety of peanuts. The standard serving size is only 2 tablespoons and the sugar content is very low, so it is rounded to “0”on the label.

So, there you have it! Keep reading the nutrition facts labels and remember, even though a nutrition facts label states "0" grams of sugar, if you consume more than the serving size, you are likely to be consuming more sugar.

Happy healthy shopping!
